I Believe

  • Learning to live with compassion, for others and ourselves, is our highest aspiration as human beings.
  • We’re all in this together, at every level — family, community, city, state, nation, planet.
  • Government is not the problem. Unchecked fear and unmitigated greed are the problems; government is part of the solution.
  • Government is socialistic by nature: through government, we do collectively what we can not or will not do individually.
  • Government is the only institution capable of protecting us from unchecked capitalism.
  • Government spending, except on defense, is inherently beneficial.
    • Defense spending is necessary but completely unproductive — tanks and aircraft carriers do not materially contribute to economic progress.
    • Our defense budget doesn’t need to be equal to the total of the next 15 countries combined.
  • Government’s goals should be to support and enhance “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
    • Life includes (but is not limited to) health care, food, and shelter.
    • Liberty includes (BINLT) equal protection of the law and safety.
    • The pursuit of happiness includes (BINLT) education and economic opportunity.
  • Money is not speech.
  • Political campaigns should be strictly publicly funded.
  • The day of voting should be a national holiday.
  • Impediments to voting should be minimized.
  • Voting fraud is a myth.
  • Corporations are not people.
  • Corporations that are too big to fail are too big to exist.
  • Capitalism is inherently amoral and must be regulated for the good of society as a whole.
  • Taxes are the price we pay to live in a stable, safe, functioning, fair, healthy society.
  • Financial transactions (except for direct investments) should be taxed.
  • Capital gains (except for direct investments) should not receive favorable tax treatment.
  • Income above (say) $1M should be taxed at at least (say) a 75% marginal tax rate.
  • The war on drugs was wrong from the get-go. Drugs should be legalized and managed as a public health issue.
  • Only a centrally managed health care system can deliver adequate, cost-effective health care to everyone.
  • Gays should have the same rights as everyone else — this is not “special” treatment.
  • Women should have complete control over their reproductive choices.
  • Immigrants built this country. We are all, except Native Americans, immigrants.
  • Workers have the right to unionize.
  • Government should not have unfettered access to our personal communications in any form.
  • Capital punishment is ineffective, immoral, and frequently misapplied.
  • In the absence of a constitutionally declared war, we do not have the right to imprison or assassinate anyone without due process.
  • No civilian needs to own an automatic or semi-automatic weapon.
  • Gun control is not gun confiscation.
  • Evolution is a scientific theory; creationism is a belief; creation science is an oxymoron.
  • Human-caused climate change is real.
